Expected growth project will focus on raising farm yield and income

THE Malaysian Prime Minister will launch a mega growth blueprint for the northern states aimed at bringing much needed progress to the rural areas.
The unveiling next week of the second of five development plans is also seen as a bid to boost Barisan Nasional’s (BN) chances in the general election widely expected next year.
Officials say agricultural improvement will be the focus of the projects being planned.
These include pushing up the padi yield, introducing big-scale commercial cattle farms and growing high-quality fruit seeds for exports.
Media reports say an estimated sum of RM100 billion has been earmarked for projects in the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), as the area is known, between now and 2010 alone.
